Elastic and bright assembly-induced luminescent crystals of platinum(ii) complexes with near-unity emission quantum yield

Abstract: Molecular crystals of Pt(II) complexes with metallophilic interactions can provide bright assembly-induced luminescence with colour tunability. However, the brittleness of many of these crystals makes their application in flexible optical...

“…Although Pt-py and most other related Pt( ii )-pic complexes are primarily synthesised in aprotic solvents ( e.g. , acetonitrile or acetone) using Na 2 CO 3 as the base, 8,21 Pt-ox could not be purely obtained using this method. Thus, the synthetic procedures for Pt-ox , Pt-pz , and Pt-Fpy were improved by employing a water/ethanol mixed solvent, which has proton-accepting ability.…”

“…Regarding mechanical effects, the elastic properties can be induced along with luminescence properties in Pt(II) complex crystals with anisotropically stacked structures controlled via Pt Pt and additional intermolecular interactions. Co-crystals of [Pt(bpic) (dFppy)] [bpic = 5-bromopicolinate, dFppy = 3,5difluoro-2-(pyridin-2-yl)phenyl] and [Pt(bpic)(ppy)] [where ppy = 2-(pyridin-2-yl)phenyl] bent easily under weak mechanical stress (elastic modulus: 1.9 and 2.6 GPa for short and mid-axis directions, respectively), and showed intense orange luminescence that originated from the 3 MMLCT state ( = 0.94) (Makino et al, 2023). Compared with the co-crystal, the respective crystals showed emission quantum yields of less than half.…”
