Elastic Stable Intramedullary Nailing for the Treatment of Complicated Juvenile Bone Cysts of the Humerus

Abstract: Juvenile bone cysts usually are asymptomatic and may manifest as pathological fractures. Since the new method of flexible intramedullary nailing (" Elastic Stable Intramedullary Nailing" - ESIN or " Embrochage Centro- Médullaire Elastique Stable" - ECMES) has demonstrated superb results in the treatment of non-pathologic fractures of the long bones in childhood, this method is rapidly gaining popularity for the treatment of spontaneous or pathological fractures. Given the self-limiting natural history of juven… Show more

“…While there are a handful of adult case series reporting excellent healing with Enders nails [13,14], there are no dedicated reports in the pediatric literature describing the results of this technique and its complications [10][11][12]. Several small case series have shown the efficacy of this implant in treating pathologic humeral shaft fractures in children and, in particular,in promoting healing in unicameral bone cysts [15][16][17]. The aim of this report is to describe the technique and results of operative stabilization of pediatric humeral shaft fractures with titanium elastic nails.…”

“…The main reasons for the injury are direct forces, which create short oblique or transverse fractures. Pathologic fractures are not rare [6] (Figures 8a to 8d), whereas wedge fractures, long oblique fractures, comminuted fractures or open fractures are [5].…”
