The modern version of the KKR (Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker) method represents the electronic structure of a system directly and efficiently in terms of its single-particle Green's function (GF). This is in contrast to its original version and many other traditional wave-function-based all-electron band structure methods dealing with periodically ordered solids. Direct access to the GF results in several appealing features. In addition, a wide applicability of the method is achieved by employing multiple scattering theory. The basic ideas behind the resulting KKR-GF method are outlined and the different techniques to deal with the underlying multiple scattering problem are reviewed. Furthermore, various applications of the KKR-GF method are reviewed in some detail to demonstrate the remarkable flexibility of the approach. Special attention is devoted to the numerous developments of the KKR-GF method, that have been contributed in recent years by a number of work groups, in particular in the following fields: embedding schemes for atoms, clusters and surfaces, magnetic response functions and anisotropy, electronic and spin-dependent transport, dynamical mean field theory, various kinds of spectroscopies, as well as first-principles determination of model parameters.

Electric quadrupolar contribution to the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation of Au and Ru in Fe

The electric quadrupolar contribution to the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation of Au and Ru in Fe was determined by nuclear magnetic resonance on oriented nuclei. The magnetic and quadrupolar parts of the relaxation were separated by the comparison of relaxation measurements on 198 Au and 199 Au and on 97 Ru and 103 Ru in the same sample. The high-field limits of the magnetic relaxation constants were deduced to be R m = 1.95 ͑ +30 −49 ͒ ͑s K͒ −1 for 198 Au and R m = 0.48͑4͒ ͑s K͒ −1 for 97 Ru. The high-field limits of the quadrupolar relaxation constants were R q = 0.60 ͑ +47 −19 ͒ ͑s K͒ −1 for 199 Au and R q = 0.062͑15͒ ͑s K͒ −1 for 103 Ru. The R q 's deviate distinctly from the predictions of ab initio calculations. However, the large systematic underestimation by the calculations that is observed for the magnetic relaxation seems to be absent for the quadrupolar relaxation. The importance of the quadrupolar contribution for the spin-lattice relaxation at impurities in Fe is discussed. In addition, the quadrupole moment of 97 Ru was determined by modulated adiabatic fast passage on oriented nuclei to be Q͑ 97 Ru͒ = −0.113͑9͒ b.

The spin-orbit induced electric field gradient at the nuclear site of 183 Os and 183 Re impurities in Fe and of 191 Pt and 186 Ir impurities in Ni was determined for ͓100͔, ͓110͔, and ͓111͔ orientations of the magnetization. The measurements were performed on single-crystal samples using nuclear magnetic resonance on oriented nuclei and modulated adiabatic fast passage on oriented nuclei. In the Ni experiments the electric field gradient was also determined for other orientations of the magnetization in the ͑110͒ plane. These data, together with previous results on the 5d impurities, provide the first fairly complete data set on the spin-orbit induced electric field gradient in cubic Fe, Co, and Ni. Our results establish in particular that the effect depends in general considerably on the direction of the magnetization. We summarize the present knowledge of these electric field gradients, their magnitude, their systematics, and the form and magnitude of their dependence on the direction of the magnetization. The properties of the effect are explained within the tight-binding model in terms of the spin-orbit induced deformation of the electron distribution. We also present and discuss data on the dependence of the hyperfine field on the direction of the magnetization, which was found to be smaller than 10 Ϫ3 , and on the inhomogeneous broadening of the electric field gradient.
