Electric‐Field‐Responsive Lithium‐Ion Conductors of Propylenecarbonate‐Based Columnar Liquid Crystals

Abstract: One‐dimensional lithium‐ion conductors responsive to electric fields are prepared by the complexation of a columnar propylenecarbonate‐based liquid crystal and lithium triflate. The assemblies are aligned macroscopically by an alternating electric field, and they transport ions along the columnar axes.

“…The LiTFSI mixtures were placed on the electrodes and heated above the isotropic point and the ionic conductivity was then measured on cooling to room temperature. 22 This observation suggests that molecules with a similar structure exhibit in a layered phase a higher conductivity than in the columnar phase. 4) the substances 4a, 4b and 4c and their mixtures with LiTFSI align in the smectic phase when they are cooled from the isotropic melt.…”

“…An alternative could be liquid crystals with cyclic carbonates as the moiety enhancing salt dissociation. 22 However, the ionic conductivity of 2.2 Â 10 À8 S cm À1 at 22 C is relatively low. [11][12][13][14] Until now, the focus has been mainly on liquid crystals with poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) moieties.…”

“…For the alignment of columnar liquid crystals, various new techniques have been produced, such as applications of electric 189,190 and magnetic fields, 191,192 and other methods. [193][194][195][196] For compound 33a, the macroscopic alignment of columns has been achieved by magnetic fields and the preservation of the 1D nanostructures has been also carried out.…”
