Electroacupuncture for Gastrointestinal Function Recovery after Gynecological Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Background. Evidence for the efficacy and safety of electroacupuncture (EA) on gastrointestinal function recovery after gynecological surgery is unclear. Objective. This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of EA on recovery of postoperative gastrointestinal function for patients receiving gynecological surgery. Data sources: PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CINAHL), Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Weipu (CQVIP), and Wanfang databases were systematically se… Show more

“…To overcome this shortcoming, multi-regional studies are required to supply solid clinical outcomes and diverse mechanistic techniques ( Guo et al, 2020 ). Second, the EA parameters, including acupoints and times and frequency of EA, were selected without a consolidated standard in the included studies, which could be a potential source of clinical heterogeneity ( Gao et al, 2021 ). Third, this study regarded EA as the only intervention and did not explore the combined use of other treatment methods for better efficacy.…”

“…When the acupuncturist felt a sinking sensation under the skin, it meant the needle was applied successfully (we called it “Deqi” in Traditional Chinese Medicine). Later, these points were connected to the EA apparatus via electrode wires at the end of the EA needle, ST36 connected to the positive pole and ST34 connected to the negative pole, which were positioned in strict accordance with the National Standard GB 12346-90 of the People’s Republic of China ( 20 ). EA parameter was selected with a frequency of 2/100 Hz, having dense waves in alternate position.…”
