Electrochemical and thermal insertion of lithium and magnesium into Zr5Sn3

Abstract: The Zr 5 Sn 3 intermetallic compound has been studied as a possible anode material for lithium-and magnesium-ion batteries. The Zr 5 Sn 3 Li x electrodes provide a reversible specific capacity of 160-140 mAh g −1 , whereas Zr 5 Sn 3 Mg x electrodes yield a slightly lower capacity of 110-95 mAh g − 1 . The lithiation and magnesiation of Zr 5 Sn 3 were investigated by means of X-ray, scanning electron microscopy, microprobe analyses, and electrochemical measurements. The electrochemical lithiation and magnesiati… Show more

“…Consequently we carried out the calculations considering the charge or discharge time without distinguishing the processes of main reaction (lithiation) and by-reaction (formation of solid electrolyte interphases or other byproducts). The series of electrochemical reactions can be presented as: We recently studied electrochemical lithiation of the binary intermetallic compounds Zr 5 Sn 3 , Tb 5 Sn 3 and Tb 5 Sb 3 crystallizing in Mn 5 Si 3 -type structures [10,11]. In the case of Zr 5 Sn 3 -and Tb 5 Sn 3 -containing electrodes we observed inclusion of Li atoms into voids of the parent structure as the dominant process.…”
