Topical treatments rely on drugs that play a crucial role in addressing skin and mucous membrane disorders. Therefore, it is highly needed to utilize accurate analytical techniques that can determine the concentration of these chemicals in various sample matrices, including pharmaceuticals, food, and water. Currently, electrochemical sensors are predominantly used in specific fields such as biomedical, industrial, and environmental monitoring, while they have not yet been incorporated into the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. However, electrochemical methods employing an expanding range of sensors provide a reliable, cost-effective, and efficient substitute for classical analytical methods. Their potential is highly favorable, offering possibilities for simultaneous determination, miniaturization, and real-time on-site monitoring. This work covers numerous sensors designed between 2020 and 2023 for the determination of topical drugs, highlighting their respective benefits and drawbacks while illuminating emerging trends. Moreover, it discusses the correlation between the used materials and the ease of manufacturing, to the achieved results, including dynamic range, detection limit, sensitivity, and selectivity. This work aims to serve as a valuable resource for researchers, engineers, and policymakers in the evolving field of electrochemical sensing by providing guidance and facilitating decision-making, which could lead to significant innovations in sensor technology.

Highly Sensitive Capsaicin Electrochemical Sensor Based on Bimetallic Metal-Organic Framework Nanocage

The content of capsaicin can be used as exotic markers of kitchen recycled oil. In this study, a bimetallic MOF nanocage (FeIII-HMOF-5) was successfully prepared by a one-step solvothermal method and used for electrode modification to prepare a highly sensitive electrochemical sensor for rapid detection of capsaicin. Capsaicin could be selectively immobilized onto the FeIII-HMOF-5 surface during infiltrating adsorption, thus exhibiting very excellent sensing performance. The detection conditions of the sensor were optimized. Under optimum conditions, the electrochemical sensor can linearly detect capsaicin in the range between 1–60 μM with a detection limit of 0.4 μM. In addition, the proposed electrochemical sensor showed excellent stability and selectivity. The real sample tests indicated the proposed electrochemical sensor was comparable to conventional UV spectrophotometry.

Selectively Imprinted β‐cyclodextrin Polymer for Colorimetric Assay of Lysophosphatidic Acid for Point of Care Detection of Ovarian Cancer

In the present study, a simple molecular imprinting technique for the quantitative measurement of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is reported for the first time through colorimetry. LPA is a phospholipid bioactive involved in many physiological and pathological processes like stimulating DNA synthesis, proliferating ovarian cancer and inducing cell migration. It is reported that the concentration of LPA in patients with gynecological cancers like ovarian cancer is considerably higher than in the control. The early diagnosis of ovarian cancer may exceed the survival rate of patients. There is a need for an analytical tool for point of care detection of ovarian cancer at an early stage. Herein, molecular imprinting technique is used to develop an imprinted β‐Cyclodextrin (β‐CD) polymer using LPA as a template. This MIP prepared was imprinted with an LPA cavity, which has been extended for colorimetry assay. The colorimetric LPA assay was conducted in the spiked blood serum sample. The detection limit of LPA in spiked serum samples is calculated as 0.078 μmol/L.
