Electrochemical Investigation of the Effect of Process Parameters on the Corrosion Behavior of Aluminum-Cladded Pressure Vessel Steel Using a Friction Stir Diffusion Cladding Process

Abstract: Surface cladding and coatings are commonly used to protect structures against corrosion in corrosive environments. In this paper, electrochemical properties of friction stir diffusion cladded ASTM A516-70 with corrosion-resistant aluminum alloy grade 5052 are studied. The effect of process parameters, tool rotational and traverse speeds on the corrosion behavior of produced cladded steels was comparatively assessed. Electrochemical analyses revealed that the cladded steel sample provided good corrosion protect… Show more

“…Since HC-KN has the highest specific capacitance value, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) test was examined to further investigate the frequency response of an energy storage device. The Nyquist plot (figure 10(a)) revealed a single semi-circular and linear line with a slope of ∼45°corresponding to the chargetransfer process and the semi-infinite linear mass-transport, respectively. Moreover, incomplete semicircle of HC-KN represent its superior resistance which is the reason why its specific capacitance value is still far away from commercial supercapacitor in global market [54,55]. Furthermore, Bode plots of -phase angle (°) versus log f at −1.0 Hz (figure 10(b)) are observed, a phase angle of ∼57°was obtained for the HC-KN.…”

“…Regarding the corrosion of pressure vessels, many studies have focused on the specific development process of electrochemistry and the chemistry of metals [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. Furthermore, other researchers do not discuss the chemistry process, and all possible chemical reactions are modeled with the help of certain kinetic phenomenological laws.…”

“…The individual Nyquist spectra of all samples at the two immersion times are also available as Sections S5 and S6 in the Supplementary Materials. EIS is a powerful technique used to characterize the electrical properties of materials and, more commonly, in studying the corrosion of metals and coatings [36][37][38]. At early times of immersion in the saline medium, the samples loaded with the limestone (C-LM) and eggshell (C-EG) showed higher impedance values than those for the parent hybrid coating (Figure 7a,b), which indicates enhanced barrier properties as a result of the modification step with the aforementioned two waste additives.…”
