Electrochemical Synthesis and Structural and Physical Characterization of One-and Two-Electron-Reduced Forms of [SMo 12 O 40 ] 2− . -Controlled potential electrolysis leads to either the one-electron reduced anion α-[SMo 12 O 40 ] 3− or to the two-electron reduced α-[SMo 12 O 40 ] 4− anion. EPR and magnetic data indicate that [SMo 12 O 40 ] 3− is a simple paramagnet but [SMo 12 O 40 ] 4− is EPR silent with temperature dependent magnetic moments, probably arising from exchange coupling and delocalization effects. Compound (IIIa) crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1 with Z = 2 (single crystal XRD). -(VU, TRUC; BOND, ALAN M.; HOCKLESS, DAVID C.
