Electrochemical Zinc Intercalation in Lithium Vanadium Oxide: A High-Capacity Zinc-Ion Battery Cathode

Abstract: Rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) with high energy densities appear promising to meet the increasing demand for safe and sustainable energy storage devices. However, electrode research on this low-cost and green system are faced with stiff challenges of identifying materials that permit divalent ion-intercalation/deintercalation. Herein, we present layered-type LiV3O8 (LVO) as a prospective intercalation cathode for zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) with high storage capacities. The detailed phase evolution study… Show more

“…In the past years, LiV 3 O 8 was mainly studied as a LIB cathode . Recently, Alfaruqi et al investigated the Zn 2+ storage properties of LiV 3 O 8 for aqueous ZIBs with 1 m ZnSO 4 (pH 4.0) as electrolyte. High reversible capacities of ≈250 mAh g −1 at a current density of 16 mA g −1 , and 172 mAh g −1 at 133 mA g −1 with capacity retention of 75% after 65 cycles were demonstrated.…”

“…On the basis of this pioneering work, studies have been extended to hydrated compounds such as V 2 O 5 ⋅ n H 2 O, V 3 O 7 ⋅ H 2 O, V 10 O 24 ⋅ 12 H 2 O, Mg x V 2 O 5 ⋅ n H 2 O, K 2 V 6 O 16 ⋅ 2.7 H 2 O, Ca 0.25 V 2 O 5 ⋅ n H 2 O, Na 2 V 6 O 16 ⋅ 3 H 2 O, and Fe 5 V 15 O 39 (OH) ⋅ 9.9 H 2 O . Anhydrous phases such as VO 2 , Zn 2 V 2 O 7 , NH 4 V 4 O 10 , potassium vanadates, and LiV 3 O 8 have also been investigated.…”

“…[6] Consequently, aqueous ZIBs are deemed as a preferable and compelling candidate for new generation energy accumulation facilities. [7] Currently, numerous efforts have been made in exploring electrode materials of ZIBs, in which the most extensively studied cathode materials are Mn-based, V-based and Prussian blue analogs-based materials. [8] Mn-based compounds, particularly manganese oxides, have the advantages of decent theoretical and wide voltage window versus Zn.…”
