Electrocorticography of Spatial Shifting and Attentional Selection in Human Superior Parietal Cortex

Abstract: Spatial-attentional reorienting and selection between competing stimuli are two distinct attentional processes of clinical and fundamental relevance. In the past, reorienting has been mainly associated with inferior parietal cortex. In a patient with a subdural grid covering the upper and lower bank of the left anterior and middle intraparietal sulcus (IPS) and the superior parietal lobule (SPL), we examined the involvement of superior parietal cortex using a hybrid spatial cueing paradigm identical to that pr… Show more

“…The effect of semantic similarity in left middle IPS (Devereux et al, 2013 ) overlapped with the effects of spatially selective attention seen in hIP1, hIP2, and hIP3 in previous functional brain mapping studies (Vandenberghe et al, 2005 ; Gillebert et al, 2013 ; Schrooten et al, 2017 ). In hIP1, hIP2, and hIP3 the presence of competing distracters during a spatial cueing task causes activation compared to trials with single targets and no distracters (Gillebert et al, 2012 ; Schrooten et al, 2017 ). This can be explained by a working memory account as distracters may enter the working memory stage and hence lead to stronger activation in the case of double compared to single stimulation.…”

“…Greenhouse-Geisser correction, and Bonferroni corrected for number of tested electrode clusters (i.e. 3 and 2 for Go/Nogo and Posner respectively) over a minimal consecutive time interval of 10ms (5 samples)(Schrooten et al 2017).…”

“…The SPL is a subregion of the dorsal posterior parietal cortex, which has diverse convergent functional architecture. 54 The SPL is associated with selective attention 55 and may play a role in shifting attention. 56 As mentioned previously, children with PGF had worse attention function than did children without PGF and children in the control group, and the SPL might be a vulnerable cortical lesion in preterm children with PGF.…”
