Electromagnetic armor test facility with modular pulsed power conceptual design

Abstract: The impulsive acceleration of protective devices or terminal ballistics interception elements like massive armor plates can only be realized by two means of pro-pulsion: chemical stored energy such as high explosives or other propellants and electric power which is converted preferably into kinetic energy by single-stage launcher assemblies like pancake coil systems. This kind of pro-pulsion has been used for more than 12 years at ZSL in the field of active armor. Furthermore, the electric launcher technology … Show more

“…Similarly, only the drive coil needs to be initiated when an ejection is required in direction 5. When an ejection is aimed at direction 3, both the drive coil and need to be initiated simultaneously [3], [4]. Other intermediate directions can be generated by modifying and controlling the propagation delay time of each module, for example, (direction 2), (direction 4).…”

“…Similarly, only the drive coil A-A' needs to be initiated when an ejection is required in direction 5. When an ejection is aimed at direction 3, both the drive coil A-A' and B-B' need to be initiated simultaneously (t 1 = t 2 = t 0 ) [3,4]. Other intermediate directions can be generated by modifying and controlling the propagation delay time of each module, for example t 1 > t 2 (direction 2), t 1 < t 2 (direction 4).…”

“…This mechanism is especially useful in applications that require fast motion of large masses over long distances. Example applications include the deployment of solar panels and telescope mirrors in space applications [1][2][3][4], the active lift of an automobile's hood upon detection of a collision with a pedestrian [5], and fast armor panel deployment for protection of military vehicles [6][7][8]. In these applications and many others, force F 0 is applied by a mechanical device (usually a spring) that stores and provides the energy that is required for moving mass M.…”
