Electromagnetic Field Emission From Gas-to-Air Bushing in a GIS During Switching Operations

Abstract: Very fast transient overvoltages (VFTOs) and the associated very fast transient currents (VFTCs) generated during switching operations in a gas-insulated substation (GIS) radiate electromagnetic (EM) fields, which in turn can leak into the external environment through apertures like SF 6 gas-to-air bushing. Therefore, it becomes necessary to characterize and quantify the EM fields when sensitive control devices are used for the operation of such substations. Keeping this in view, a numerical model using a fini… Show more

“…In the far-field region, EM radiations and power density are derived from the retarded potentials equations. Inspired from models in [5] and [8] and from many experimental results in [9], [11] and [35], we propose a coherent approach to model EM impulsive transient noise interferences induced by corona discharges on high-voltages installation.…”

“…The high voltages applied to electrodes separated by air cavities and air gaps can leads to discharges when the dielectric strength of the air is reached. Currents and charges induced by the discharge mechanism generate electromagnetic (EM) radiations [8]- [11]. The EM waves interfere with usual wireless communication systems using radio frequency such as TV, FM bands [12], [13] and industrial, scientific, and medical bands [2], [14], [15].…”

“…Thus, the HRPC technique will see use in China's future UHV transmission system. Very fast transient currents (VFTCs) are generated when the disconnecting switch (DS) is operated and these currents can cause insulation breakdown in the associated power equipment [11]. In particular, a proper understanding of the characteristics of VFTCs is of great importance for protecting gas-insulated switchgear (GIS).…”

“…As a result, Standards regarding Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) in power substations have been introduced and many researchers are working on the theoretical modelling of the mechanism of the transient phenomena in the power substations when switchgear is operated [6][7][8].…”
