Electromagnetic radiations from rocks

Abstract: To test the possibility of the emission of electromagnetic waves from rocks, experiments have been made to measure the electric field by using mainly granite samples that were struck together or struck by a hammer or a weight and were fractured by a bending moment. The wide‐band (10 Hz to 100 kHz) waveforms of electric signals were digitally recorded. Roughly four kinds of signals have been observed: 30 kHz, 5 kHz, 10 Hz and, in addition, intermittent pulses. Using these measurements of the electric fields, th… Show more

“…We expected EMR from the main fracture of the main shock, as many results of rock experiments in laboratories showed the existence of EMR from slidings or fractures of rocks (Nitsan, 1977;Ogawa et al, 1985;Yoshida et al, 1994; and so on), but no obvious signals just at the origin time of the main shock were recorded in the VLF range.…”

“…ルミネッセンスは,物質がエネルギーを吸収し,そのエネルギーを光や電磁波として放出する現象である.ル ミネッセンスは幾つかの種類に分類でき,メカノルミネッセンスは機械的作用に伴う発光現象 (Chandra and Shrivastava, 1979; 急激な応力変化による電圧変化に起因するという報告もある (Nitsan, 1977;Ogawa et al, 1985).また,岩石のメカ ノルミネッセンスは直接的な岩石自体の発光という可能性も考えられ,岩石中に含まれる可燃性ガスの影響も考 えられる因子(榎本, 2010)であるのに対して,圧電現象による雰囲気ガスに起因する放電や,プラズマ化による可 能性も示唆 (Lockner et al, 1983;竹内他, 1997;高木, 池谷, 1998 Variation of luminescence intensity from Quartz detected by luminescence analyzer using a photomultiplier tube and voltage from strain gage during 3-point destructive bending test. The strong luminescence intensity over 9,000 counts is observed when voltage from strain drops due to the break of the rock.…”
