Electromagnetically induced absorption scheme for vapor-cell atomic clock

Abstract: A dual-frequency light field scheme, composed of counterpropagating pump and probe light waves with equal circular polarizations and different intensities, is proposed for the detection of subnatural-linewidth electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) resonances. In this scheme, the bright-type EIA resonance is obtained at fixed static magnetic field by tuning the frequency difference between both optical fields and can be used as a frequency reference in an atomic clock. Using a 5-mm long buffer-gas-filled… Show more

“…Here we examine a configuration composed of counterpropagating pump and probe beams with opposite circular polarizations (σ + σ − ). It should be noted that similar configurations have already brought relevant results for developing atomic clocks [24,25]. The same light field geometry was studied in [26] in a cm-size K vapor cell with antirelaxation coating of the walls.…”

“…Here, the Raman phase refers to the phase difference between the two frequency components of the bichromatic light. According to [15], assuming E 1 = E 2 , the product of the dark states of the pump and probe beams can be expressed as…”

“…Electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA), the opposite of EIT, was discovered in the 1990s [13,14], and its application to atomic clocks was recently demonstrated by Denis Brazhnikov in 2019 [15], where an EIA signal was produced by two counterpropagating dual-frequency beams with the same circular polarization. The obtained EIA signal leads to promising short-term frequency stability at a level of 5.8 × 10 −12 τ −1/2 (τ ⩽ 20 s).…”
