Electromyography-guided electrical stimulation therapy for patients with pusher behavior: A case series

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Pusher behavior (PB) is a posture disorder due to a subjective bias in verticality perception. However, muscle activity characteristics in this disorder and the effective treatments are not known. OBJECTIVE: To investigate electromyographic (EMG) activity and the effect of electrical stimulation (ES) in PB. METHODS: Two PB patients were enrolled. The EMG activity was measured over the upper and lower limb muscles on the non-paretic side, and over the trunk muscles on both sides during sitting. We u… Show more

“…A variety of therapy methods have been developed, like the use of visual feedback for upright body adjustment (6)(7)(8)(9)(10), machine supported gait training (11,12), lateral sitting training on a tilted plane (13,14), trunk strengthening (15), or a balance-based intervention program (16). Further approaches used stimulation techniques, like galvanic vestibular stimulation (12,17,18), transcranial direct current stimulation (17,19) or electromyographic activity-based electrical stimulation (20).…”
