Electron acoustic waves in double-kappa plasmas: Application to Saturn's magnetosphere

Abstract: Using a kinetic theoretical approach, the characteristics of electron acoustic waves (EAWs) are investigated in plasmas whose electron velocity distributions are modeled by a combination of two kappa distributions, with distinct densities, temperatures, and κ values. The model is applied to Saturn's magnetosphere, where the electrons are well fitted by such a double‐kappa distribution. The results of this model suggest that EAWs will be weakly damped in regions where the hot and cool electron densities are app… Show more

“…The observed distributions of charged particles have been well fitted with a generalized Lorentzian distribution, known as the kappa distribution, since it fits both the thermal as well as the suprathermal parts of the observed energy velocity spectra [ Krimigis et al , ; Hasegawa et al , ; Christon et al , ; Pierrard and Lemaire , ; Maksimovic et al , ; Viñas et al , ; Baluku et al , ]. The spectral index κ is a measure of the slope of the energy spectrum of the suprathermal particles forming the tail of the velocity distribution function; the smaller the value, the more suprathermal particles in the distribution function tail and the harder the energy spectrum.…”

“…In this section we will give the characteristics of ion waves for parameter values that are typical of the three regions of Saturn's magnetosphere, viz., the inner magnetosphere, intermediate magnetosphere and the outer magnetosphere as given by Shippers et al Table 1 where they mainly used data values obtained on the Cassini outbound trajectory (Baluku et al 2011).…”
