Electron-cyclotron heating of plasma in toroidal systems

Abstract: Absorption of microwave energy at electron-cyclotron frequency is a promising method of heating plasma to thermonuclear temperatures in large toroidal devices in which the energy confinement time exceeds the characteristic time of energy exchange between the electron and ion components of the plasma. The smallness of the wavelength compared with the dimensions of the system makes it possible to use quasioptical waveguides which are easy to match with the plasma. The microwave power, injected in the form of an … Show more

“…Absorption of the ordinary wave at the fundamental cyclotron resonance derives from the theory of the upper hybrid resonance frequency propagation in a warm plasma with non-vanishing density and may be considered as a finite-Larmorradius effect [6,7]. The wave damping increases with temperature and density and is at maximum for quasi-perpendicular propagation.…”

“…A main mechanism of plasma heating used in experimental (ITER) and pilot‐plant (DEMO) controlled‐fusion (CF) facilities is the phenomenon of electron‐cyclotron resonance—absorption of the energy of the electromagnetic field by an ensemble of electrons at a frequency close to the frequency of electron rotation in the magnetic field. According to the estimates of the plasma community and existent concepts, the ITER facility alone requires from 24 to 50 continuous‐wave megawatt sources that generate at a frequency of 170 GHz .…”
