Electron density measurements from cutoff of electron cyclotron emission in the DIII-D tokamak

Abstract: Cutoff of microwave emission at the second harmonic of the electron cyclotron frequency has been used to infer the local electron density profile in the DIII-D tokamak. Modeling the density profile during the uncontrolled density increase associated with the transition to H-mode operation permits the profile shape factor and line average to be estimated. In special cases, the density fluctuations associated with sawteeth can also be inferred. Independent corroboration of the standard density diagnostics has be… Show more

“…Discharges were operated at B T = 2.05-2.17 T with I P = 1.60-1.97 MA and heated through NBI with power P NBI = 8-14 MW. Employing 2nd harmonic X-mode electron cyclotron heating (ECH) is not possible in SH due to the high densities, which are above the ECH reflection limit [25,26]. The plasma shape was chosen to be LSN in order to measure heat fluxes with a dedicated IR camera viewing the lower divertor, with a high average triangularity (δ = 0.5 − 0.6) and elongation (κ = 1.8-1.9).…”

“…SH discharges with hot ion modes show a transition from an early and short very high confinement phase (duration of 0.5 s ≈ 1-2 τ E ) with high stored energy (2.9-3.4 MJ) and pedestal pressure (22)(23)(24)(25)(26)(27)(28)(29)(30) to a stationary phase with improved confinement (H ~1.0-1.6) and stored energy (2.0-2.6 MJ).…”

“…The radial resolution varies from 1 to 2.5 cm. The interferometer measured the density along the central chord and the ECE-the radial coordinate for which the cutoff occurred [20,21]. The experimental points are shown in figure 4, and, assuming a quasi-parabolic profile with exponent α, the best fits to the data are represented.…”
