Terms of use: Documents in EconStor may AbstractA better understanding of factors influencing eHealth adoption is required given the strong policy attention to eHealth but a low level of actual adoption in many European countries. A model for organisational eHealth adoption is proposed in the study, derived from several adoption frameworks. The empirical part is based on a survey among hospitals in the Netherlands and includes a Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) approach. Specific attention is paid to measurement of organisational readiness and to adoption as a process including different stages. Our results suggest a sharp decrease in the adoption process after the stage of interest/commitment and significant influence of size of the hospital, organisational readiness including technical aspects, and support by top management of the hospital. The paper concludes with some organisational strategies and policies to foster eHealth adoption and suggestions for future study.

Electronic data interchange (EDI), the computer‐to‐computer exchange of business transactions in standardized formats, is one of the earliest forms of electronic commerce. Business benefits of EDI include reduced costs, improved accuracy, and support for just‐in‐time (JIT) inventory management and continuous replenishment process (CRP) strategies. EDI also has the potential to drive up costs, particularly for smaller organizations. This article provides an understanding of how EDI works and explains the technical and administrative aspects of implementing EDI. The article covers the standards developed for EDI and provides example applications of EDI. Although EDI pre‐dates commercial use of the Internet, Internet‐based EDI is rapidly evolving and offers the potential to make it easier and less expensive to attain the benefits of EDI. Organizations that implement EDI need to consider business process reengineering and trading partner relationships to be successful.

As part of the ESPRIT project KITE, the authors carried out a qualitative study of 27 SMEs that were actively engaged in E‐commerce and whose activities were judged to represent best practice in this field. As the most successful SMEs grow rapidly, they will become increasingly aware of the need to improve and extend their existing processes. Based on our analysis of the best‐practice SMEs, we make 15 recommendations for ways in which SMEs can ensure that they can support high‐volume E‐commerce activity by adopting best practices for process improvement, partnership and integration.
