Petersen (1968) moved the species to the subgenus Haplomylomys, but this was not accepted, and P. mexicanus was retained in the mexicanus species group in the subgenus Peromyscus (Huckaby 1980). Evidence from Musser (1969) and Huckaby (1980) supports the inclusion in P. mexicanus of P. guatemalensis tropicalis and 3 forms (angelensis, coatlanensis, and sloeops) that were formerly considered subspecies of Osgoodomys banderanus.…”
