“…Hooper (1958) moved P. mexicanus to the boylii species group, but later returned it to the mexicanus species group (Hooper and Musser 1964). Petersen (1968) moved the species to the subgenus Haplomylomys, but this was not accepted, and P. mexicanus was retained in the mexicanus species group in the subgenus Peromyscus (Huckaby 1980). Evidence from Musser (1969) and Huckaby (1980) supports the inclusion in P. mexicanus of P. guatemalensis tropicalis and 3 forms (angelensis, coatlanensis, and sloeops) that were formerly considered subspecies of Osgoodomys banderanus.…”
