Electrospinning of Novel Poly(ester amide)s

Abstract: Novel PEAs derived from 1,4‐butanediol, dimethyl adipate and a preformed α,ω‐amino alcohol were synthesised and successfully electrospun from solution. The effects of increasing the ratio of amide/ester groups in the copolymer, polymer concentration, solvent mixtures and applied voltage on fibre morphology and diameter were investigated. The obtained fibres (diameter 180–450 nm) were randomly oriented. The fibre quality and homogeneity increased with increasing amide concentration. The solvent mixture CHCl3/HC… Show more

“…The microstructure of these polymers could be evaluated by NMR (see Table 1). [37] The theoretical and experimental compositions of the synthesised PEAs (Table 1) are in good agreement, indicating that the polymerisation reactions were successful. More detailed information about the synthesis and characterisation of the obtained products is given elsewhere.…”

“…[37] The resultant polymers are named as PEAx% with PEA for PEA and x% (10-65%) for the theoretically incorporated amide segment concentration. The composition and the molecular weights of the synthesised PEAs together with those of the homopolyester poly(butylene adipate) (PBA) are summarised in Table 1.…”

“…92 synthesized segmented aliphatic PEAs by melt poly condensation of 1,4-butanediol, dimethyladipate and a preformed α,ω-aminoalcohol based on ε-caprolactone and 1,4-diamino butane with different amount of amide segments incorporated in the polyester backbone. Soft domains and hard domains can be controlled by varying the ratio of ester and amide segments.…”

“…Especially, in tandem with the boom in advanced materials processing for biomedical applications, the use of EH processing methods are being deployed at a colossal rate. These come in several forms such as electrospraying (particle formation),2 electrospinning (fibre generation),3 multiple needle co‐axial forming4 and more recently printing 5…”
