Electrospun Cyclodextrin/Poly(L-lactic acid) Nanofibers for Efficient Air Filter: Their PM and VOC Removal Efficiency and Triboelectric Outputs

Abstract: In this work, PLLA and CD/PLLA nanofibers were fabricated using electrospinning and utilized as a particulate matter (PM) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) filter. The electrospun PLLA and CD/PLLA were characterized with various techniques, including SEM, BET, FTIR, XRD, XPS, WCA, DSC, tensile strength testing, PM and VOCs removal efficiency, and triboelectric performance. The results demonstrated that the best air filter was 2.5 wt%CD/PLLA, which performed the highest filtration efficiencies of 96.84 ± 1.… Show more

“…Figure 6 d depicts the O1s spectra which can be fitted into two peaks around 530.78 and 532.28 eV. The most intense peak with binding energy ~ 530.78 eV is simply related to oxygen combined with a metal, which indicates the presence of mixed oxide from Mo and Co 55 , 59 , 60 , while the other O1s peak at lower binding energy is assigned to aliphatic C–O bonding from organic residuals 61 . The XPS analysis outcomes show high consistency with XRD and EDS results, confirming the formation of the ternary catalytic system.…”

“…From the filtering results, the 2.5 wt% CD/PLA electrospun membrane achieved over 95% of PM2.5 and PM10 removal for 20 min. VOC removal represented by a toluene vapor entrapment test demonstrated that the 2.5 wt% CD/PLA sample removed 90% of toluene within 5 min [ 112 ].…”

“…Wanwong et al., [ 111 ] added cyclodextrins (CDs) to poly(L‐lactic acid) (PLLA) in order to obtain a mask based of nanofibrous membrane that could contextually filter PM and VOCs. In fact, piezoelectric and triboelectric property of PLLA lead to an increase in membrane PM capturing ability due to the high electrostatic interaction between PLLA nanofiber and PM.…”

“…They successfully loaded ZnO NPs into PVA nanofibers during the spinning process achieving a filtration efficiency higher than 99.99% for UFPs. Moreover, recently, Wanwong et al [111] electrospun PLLA solutions in which up to 10 wt.% of CDs were added with excellent results. 2.5 wt.% CDs containing membranes showed the best air filtration performance if compared to neat PLLA (16% higher) and other composites membranes with different CDs amounts.…”
