Electrospun Nanofibrous Membranes: A Novel Solid Substrate for Microfluidic Immunoassays for HIV

Abstract: The combination of electrospun nanofibrous membranes and microfluidic channels dramatically improves the sensitivities of HIV immunoassays in microfluidic channels. Simplicity and effectiveness of the new system can potentially pave the way for inexpensive, portable and highly sensitive diagnostic devices.

“…[60] We prepared a uniform PC fibers through ES method and then convert fibers into stable and flat membrane using a wet-press method for proteins immobilizing (Figure 8a,b). [61] This porous fiber membrane can better promote the adsorption of IgG and lower the LOD compared to conventional types of membranes (Figure 8c,d). PVDF porous membrane are made using the same method (Figure 8e).…”

“…The examples include HIV detection, 71 histidine-tagged protein purification, 72 and cross-array protein immunoassays 73 and are aimed for biosensing applications. However, none of these approaches offer any precise spatial or hierarchical control of the deposition of electrospun fibers, nor the possibility to vary crucial fiber parameters such as alignment orientation and diameter in the same device.…”
