Electrostatic Probe Studies of the Nitrogen Pink Afterglow

Abstract: Studies of the short-duration nitrogen pink afterglow (PA) are reported for different electrostatic probe types (spherical and cylindrical) and materials (Pt and Au). Various collision-dominated probe theories were applied to determine the electron density Ne and temperature Te. Experimental radial distribution curves are presented for the parameters kTe, Ie / Ii (electron to ion current ratio), and Ne at various points in the PA. An apparent increase in the ion current caused by emission of electrons from the… Show more

“…This is not the case as shown in [1] and discussed by Chen and Goodings themselves. It should be better to compare our averaged energies uwith the kTe values reported in [10]. There is a satisfactory agreement at the beginning (1 ms) and at the end (12 ms) of the pink afterglow, with the present u value found at 01 = 8 500 K (cf.…”

“…Comments on earlier experimental results. Some earlier experimental works [8][9][10] seem to indicate the lines expressed in this work as well as in [1]. The experimental work of Formato and Gilardini [8] appears in fact as an indication of the first regime.…”

“…It thus seems reasonable to expect emission currents of the order of the ion current. Several medium-pressure single probe studies (Chen and Goodings 1968, 1969, Chen et a1 1970, have attributed anomalously high ion current values to electron emission by metastable atoms or molecules; but little qualitat-0022-37271871010050 + 05 $02.50 @ 1987 IOP Publishing Ltd ive work has been done. Langmuir (1931) considered the diffusion limited current between two electrodes for Maxwellian and mono-energetic electron emission.…”
