Elenoside increases intestinal motility

Abstract: Elenoside is a lignan with an action similar to that of purgative and prokinetics drugs. Elenoside, could be an alternative to cisapride in treatment of gastrointestinal diseases as well as a preventive therapy for the undesirable gastrointestinal effects produced by opioids used for mild to moderate pain.

“…Gastric emptying after treatment with GhrR agonists was determined in both mice and rats. In mice, gastric elimination was measured by weighing stomach contents after oral gavage of a charcoal marking mixture (Mascolo et al, 2002;Navarro et al, 2006). In rat studies, gastric elimination of an acaloric mixture containing phenol red (Qiu et al, 2008b) was measured spectrophotometrically.…”

“…The gastrointestinal transit assay was then conducted according to standard methods, described previously (Mascolo et al, 2002;Navarro et al, 2006). On the morning of the experiment, water was also removed from all cages.…”

“…It should be mentioned that the cytotoxicity data for these lignans were obtained for the first time in this investigation, and they help to support a recent finding on the cytotoxic potential of C. spinarum stem extract against human leukaemia HL‐60 cells (Sehar et al ., ). In addition, the presence of several lignans in this plant explains its claimed use as a purgative since some lignans are known to have purgative activity, for example, podophyllotoxin from Podophyllum , and elenoside from Justicia hyssopifolia (Navarro et al ., ). However, the effects of each of these isolates on the intestinal mobility remain to be investigated before any conclusion can be drawn.…”

“…Faecal samples were dried in a conventional oven at a temperature of 70°C. After 24 h, dried faeces were weighed again for determining their dry weight (DW) (Navarro et al, 2006). The difference between the WW and the DW helped to determine the water content of faeces (Navarro et al, 2006) expressed as a percentage, by the following relation:…”
