Elevated Serum Level of Anti-Mullerian Hormone in Patients with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Relationship to the Ovarian Follicle Excess and to the Follicular Arrest

Abstract: The serum level of anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH), a product from granulosa cells involved in follicle growth, has been shown to correlate tightly with the small antral follicle number (FN) at ultrasonography (U/S) in women who do not have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Because PCOS is associated with a 2- to 3-fold increase in growing FN, we investigated whether an increased AMH serum level correlates to other hormonal and/or U/S features of PCOS. Serum AMH has been assayed in 104 women (59 symptomatic PCOS,… Show more

“…Levels of AMH in the serum are closely correlated with the number of early antral follicles in both healthy women and women with PCOS [12][13][14]. Thus, AMH may be a suitable hormonal marker of the ovarian follicle count [15].…”

“…Women with this syndrome are characterized by an excessive number of small antral follicles (2-3 fold that of normal ovaries) [5]. As an exclusively granulosa cell product, it was initially proposed that the rise in serum AMH in PCOS was a consequence of the increased small antral follicle number in these ovaries [6]. The Capsule In PCOS women, high AMH levels on day 3 of the IVF stimulation cycle predict high ovarian response to gonadotrophins, but low embryo implantation rates.…”

“…The size of both ovaries was assessed and mean ovarian size was calculated. According to our data in normal women, increased ovarian size was defined as a mean ovarian size >7.5 mL (19).…”
