“…The usefulness of hepatic cytochrome P450-dependent monooxygenases (MOs) as biomarkers in fish has been clearly demonstrated, as these are well known to be induced by chemicals like polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) (Masfaraud et al, 1990;Haasch et al, 1993;Palace et al, 1996). In the case of some xenobiotics, MO activities are related to the degree of contamination of the organism (Payne et al, 1987;Goks+yr et al, 1994;Stagg et al, 1995).…”

“…PAHs are regarded as priority contaminants of terrestrial as well as marine ecosystems (that is, PAHs are listed in the OSPAR list of chemical for priority action) because of their mutagenic and carcinogenic activity. Direct effects of hydrocarbon exposure on adult fishes have been well documented in laboratory (Fletcher et al 1982;Heintz et al 2000;Payne and Fancey 1989) or in field studies, following a spill (Bue et al 1998;Haensly et al 1982) in polluted estuaries (Heintz 2007;Johnson et al 1998) or in relation with oil platforms (Stagg et al 1995). These effects include the induction of detoxification process, tissue alterations and functional abnormalities.…”

“…This assessment took into account possible differences in the gender-specific expression of mEH activity. Gender-specific differences have been reported for cytochromes P450 in fish and may be related to reproductive condition and oestradiol levels (F6rlin et al 1984;Larsen et al 1992;Buhler et al 1994;Stagg et al 1995). Differences between male and female levels of cytochrome P450 (Westin et al 1992;Shapiro et al 1994) and mEH expression (Christou et al 1989;Kim and Kim 1992) in mammals have also been recorded but these are likely to be determined by pituitary hormones.…”

“…The common dab, Limanda limanda, is frequently used (Goksayr et al 1991(Goksayr et al , 1992Lange et al 1992;Renton and Addison 1992;Eggens et al 1992;Stagg et al 1992Stagg et al , 1995 to assess the biological effectsof contamination in the North Sea and this species has been adopted into environmental monitoring progranames such as that of the North Sea Task Force (Stagg et al 1991). The choice of this species is determined by a number of factors including its wide-spread distribution, its benthic habit, the induction of xenobiotic-metabolising enzymes by common environmental pollutants and its apparent susceptibility to hepatic carcinogensis (Goksoyret al 1991(Goksoyret al , 1992Lange et al 1992;Renton and Addison 1992;Eggens et al 1992;Stagg et al 1992).…”
