Elevation of neuron-specific enolase in serum and cerebrospinal fluid of early stage Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease

Abstract: Although mean NSE levels of CJD were higher in CSF than in the serum, there still is a case with higher serum NSE level than CSF. These results suggest that the mechanism of elevation of serum NSE may not be a simple leakage from CSF, and that the measurement of serum NSE level may be useful for diagnosis of early stage CJD.

“…NSE is the only recommended biomarker of the prognostic value in hypoxic brain damage after cardiac pulmonary resuscitation [28]. Increased concentrations of serum NSE in cerebral infarction [2,14,19,26], traumatic brain injury [3,4,13], Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease [1,15], and status epilepticus [11,24] have been reported. However, a comparison of NSE values in seizures and syncopes has yet to be conducted.…”

“…To evaluate neuronal damage, we also measured CSF neuron-specific enolase (NSE), a soluble CNS-derived pro- tein previously proposed as neurodegenerative marker in dementia [7] and prion disease [8].…”

“…Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) is reported to be elevated and was one of the first protein with potential for differential diagnosis of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease from other dementing illnesses [24,[47][48][49][50]. In our sCJD patient cohort homozygous group (MM and VV) showed elevated levels of NSE as compared to the heterozygous [45].…”
