“…Thirteen (81.2%) of 16 and 12 (80%) of 15 nonresponders continued to show high anti-cysticercus IgG and IgM titers, respectively. The study suggested that a negative ELISA result for both IgG and IgM antibodies denotes the cure of NCC [13]. In the present study, before the treatment, all of the serum samples positive with the CSE and LMM antigens were also positive with the use of ES antigens.…”

“…Very few reports indicate the evaluation of ELISA to detect humoral immune response in the assessment of therapeutic response after the treatment with the use of crude [12], purified, and heterologous antigens [13]. In the present study, with the use of crude antigen, out of 14 serum samples positive before the treatment, 5 (35.7%) samples were persistently seropositive even 3–6 months and 12 months PT.…”

“…When regarding the diagnostic approaches for NCC, the immunologic tests more commonly used to detect antibodies against T. solium are the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Western Blot (WB) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and/or serum (Montero et al 2003;Barcelos et al 2005;Schantz 2006;Husain et al 2008). Using purified glycoproteins by enzyme-linked immunoelectrotransfer blot, Tsang et al (1989) found high sensitivity and specificity indexes in serum and CSF samples.…”

“…In many countries where T. solium is endemic, neuroimaging methods could be inaccessible and/or too expensive for the population at risk, often rural. Under these conditions, serology may provide a viable tool for diagnosis of the infection (6,16,18,35).As NC immunodiagnosis continues to be a challenge because of the increasing difficulty in obtaining parasites from naturally infected pigs for the preparation of T. solium homologous antigen (33), alternative antigens, including heterologous antigens from Taenia saginata, have also been used with satisfactory results to diagnose human NC (29,31,32). T. saginata cysticerci in the cystic stage may be obtained in considerable amounts, because the eating habits in many countries, including Brazil, are based mainly on cattle meat consumption.…”
