Ellipsomyxa syngnathi sp. n. (Myxozoa, Myxosporea) in the pipefish Syngnathus typhle and S. rostellatus (Teleostei, Syngnathidae) from Denmark

Abstract: A new species Ellipsomyxa syngnathi sp. n. (Myxozoa) is described from Syngnathus typhle L. and Syngnathus rostellatus Nilsson, 1855 (Syngnathidae), using spore morphology and SSU rDNA sequence data. Monosporic plasmodia develop in the internal gallbladder wall. The ellipsoid myxospore has two pyriform polar capsules which discharge at opposite sides some distance from both sutural line and spore ends. “…are distinctly greater in all dimensions than all previously described species of Ellipsomyxa (Table 2) Phylogenetic analyses using partial sequences of the SSU rRNA gene, confirmed the monophyly of the genus Ellispomyxa with a high bootstrap support. “…The designation of this species to the genus Zschokkella Auerbach, 1909 was based only on the spore morphometry. After erecting the genus Ellipsomyxa Køie, 2003 (Ceratomyxidae) and using SSU rDNA sequence data, Z. mugilis was transferred to Ellipsomyxa as E. mugilis (see Køie & Karlsbakk, 2009). The morphology and spore measurements reported in the present study agree well with those presented in the original description of Sitjà-Bobadilla & Alvarez-Pellitero (1993) and with the SSU rDNA sequence data reported by Køie & Karlsbakk (2009).…”
