In 2018, the state of Himachal Pradesh in north India launched an initiative to convert all its farmers to natural farming (NF), an agroecological approach. The aim was to address multiple challenges related to rural livelihoods, high input costs, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation. This paper is based on a qualitative case study of the state programme to transition farmers to NF. It seeks to understand how its mechanisms support and empower small and marginal women farmers. In addition to identifying mechanisms that facilitate the effective uptake of NF, the case study sought women’s views on whether these mechanisms increased spaces for decision making and developed capabilities and autonomy. Framed within the vision of reclaiming food sovereignty, various mechanisms such as training in villages, participating in NF groups and networks, visits to model farms, and adopting leadership roles offered new pathways for women farmers to gain confidence and capabilities. Women began to participate in spaces that had been culturally and structurally denied to them. This case study demonstrates how agroecology initiatives, with a particular emphasis on gender, can offer women various opportunities for decision making, income generation, and creative expression. These initiatives also expand community agency and enable the acquisition of knowledge necessary for sustainable ecosystems.

The present paper discusses the presence and vitality of peasant poetry as an expression of the peasant way of life in Sertão do Pajeú (Brazil), and it seeks to understand to what extent it can play an important role in the territory, such as agroecological organizations considering work from the concept of “coexistence with the semiarid” as a communication and popular education tool. We performed semi-structured interviews, participant observation and bibliographic and documentary research. In addition, we filled in a field journal and took photographic and audiovisual records. We understand peasant poetry as an expression of the popular culture of that territory, produced by peasant poets to interpret, communicate and reaffirm their way of life and their relationship with nature. Peasant poetry is part of the identity and is currently present in the collective memory of Sertão do Pajeú, and it has been guided by agroecological organizations and can become an instrument capable of enhancing the search for environmental sustainability in the territory.

Os sistemas agrícolas convencionais têm promovido desmatamento, emissão de gases de efeito estufa, perda da fertilidade de solos, dependência de insumos com consequente aumento de custos, o êxodo e a masculinização do meio rural. A alardeada produtividade tem servido mais para satisfazer os interesses do mercado, do que para atender às necessidades alimentares das pessoas. Os sistemas agrícolas que adotam práticas agroecológicas favorecem a provisão de serviços ecossistêmicos e alimentos de qualidade. A agroecologia é uma ciência multi, inter e transdisciplinar, capaz de sustentar sistemas agrícolas, incluindo a criação animal, reduzindo impactos ambientais, com produção de alimentos de qualidade, e rentabilidade econômica. Essa revisão objetiva contextualizar os desafios para a criação animal agroecológica e suas possibilidades de integração com a produção vegetal para equilibrar diversos benefícios nos âmbitos ambiental, sanitário e econômico.
