During the past years a number of international efforts have led to the development of the IEEE LOM standard as a commonly accepted way for describing educational resources, facilitating storage, search and retrieval of these resources through web-based repositories. On the other hand, it was recognized early enough that it is not possible for a generic standard such as IEEE LOM to meet specific requirements and accommodate the particular needs of different educational communities. As a result, a practice of generating Application Profiles (APs) of the IEEE LOM has emerged and a number of different APs have been developed worldwide. However, despite the widespread development of APs it seems that a limited number of software tools exist, aiming to support the process of IEEE LOM Application Profiling. Moreover, these tools have a number of limitations, adding extra barriers to their users in this process. In this paper, we target addressing this problem by introducing a new web-based tool (ASK-LOM-AP) that aims to overcome the identified limitations and simplify the process of developing and managing IEEE LOM APs for different educational communities.

The last few years have witnessed a fast growth of the concept of Social Software. Be it video sharing such as YouTube, photo sharing such as Flickr, community building such as MySpace, or social bookmarking such as del.icio.us. These websites contain valuable user-generated metadata called folksonomies. Folksonomies are ad hoc, light-weight knowledge representation artefacts to describe web resources using people's own vocabulary. The cheap metadata contained in such websites presents potential opportunities for us (researchers) to benefit from. This thesis presents a novel tool that uses folksonomies to automatically generate metadata with educational semantics in an attempt to provide semantic annotations to bookmarked web resources, and to help in making the vision of the Semantic Web a reality. The tool comprises two components: the tags normalisation process and the semantic annotation process. The tool uses the del.icio.us social bookmarking service as a source for folksonomy tags.The tool was applied to a case study consisting of a framework for evaluating the usefulness of the generated semantic metadata within the context of a particular eLearning application. This implementation of the tool was evaluated over three dimensions: the quality, the searchability and the representativeness of the generated semantic metadata. The results show that folksonomy tags were acceptable for creating semantic metadata. Moreover, folksonomy tags showed the power of aggregating people's intelligence.The novel contribution of this work is the design of a tool that utilises folksonomy tags to automatically generate metadata with fine gained and extra educational semantics.iii

A number of international efforts have been initiated during the past few years leading to the definition of educational metadata specifications for the commonly agreed description of educational resources. As more and more applications are implemented using educational metadata, it becomes obvious that it would be difficult for a single metadata model to accommodate the functional requirements of all applications. As a result, application profiles aim to facilitate the application-oriented implementation of educational metadata specifications. In this paper we discuss the issue of standardization vs. conversion and will present different existing specifications with the relative merits of each one, we will examine the fundamental techniques for the definition of application profiles and will focus on discussing interoperability issues in the case of application profiles. Finally, we will demonstrate the use of a tool which offers a graphical user interface for straightforward metadata authoring and at the same time has the necessary suppleness to easily incorporate new educational metadata specifications and/or application profiles.
