Embodied Energy and Environmental Impact of Large-Power Stand-Alone Photovoltaic Irrigation Systems

Abstract: A life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology was used to evaluate the cumulative energy demand and the related environmental impact of three large-power stand-alone photovoltaic (PV) irrigation systems ranging from 40 kWp to 360 kWp. The novelty of this analysis is the large power of these systems as the literature up to now is restricted to modeled PV pumping systems scenarios or small power plants, where the size can be a critical factor for energy and environmental issues. The analysis shows that the yearly em… Show more

“…Other authors have proposed a life cycle assessment for these solar photovoltaic modules [58,59] or an economic prioritization for PV installation alternatives [60,61] to reduce the payback period (time needed to reimburse the funds spent). Manufacturers have quantified the PV modules' performance at 90% after 10 years and around 80% after 25 years [62].…”

“…Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are steadily becoming one of the main three electricity sources in Europe [10]. The entire installed PV capacity in 2016 reached 303 GWp and in that year Spain and Italy were responsible for 5.4 and 19.3 GWp, respectively [11].…”

“…These areas are, consequently, those where irrigators expressed a greater interest in the introduction of renewable energies during the workshops. They have observed positive experiences in the region [60], with local pioneer WUAs installing photovoltaic systems being able to recover the investment costs in 10 years and reduce energy costs to near zero.…”
