Emergence of Aggressive Population in the Bipolaris sorokiniana of Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) Through Anastomosis

Abstract: Bipolaris sorokiniana is a hemibiotrophic pathogenic fungus responsible for spot blotch of wheat and barley. Evolution process of most virulent population of B. sorokiniana of barley was studied through colony morphology, melanin content, spore production, pathogenicity, nuclear condition and anastomosis. Bridge (H) type and hyphal tip anastomosis were observed between black and white isolates. Maximum number of nuclei (4.14 nuclei cell -1 ) were present in mixed isolates followed by white isolate (2.43 nuclei… Show more

“…The existence of two distinct mating types (A, a) was suggested in an analysis of a large number of isolates of B. sorokiniana collected from diverse locations (Wen & Lu, ). The pathogen is generally heterothallic, and heterokaryons with a multinucleate condition do occur, which is attributed either to the occurrence of mutations or to anastomoses that have been observed between strains (Bashyal et al ., ). However, the occurrence of two mating types is insufficient evidence for sexual reproduction, unless actual mating or recombination is demonstrated, because if other requirements for mating are not available (e.g.…”

“…Широко распространенный во всем мире гемибиотрофный гриб Bipolaris sorokinianа (=Drechslera sorokiniana, Helminthosporium sativum) вызывает темно-бурую пятнистость листьев (гельминтоспориоз) зерновых культур, а также белоколосость, корневую гниль и черный зародыш семян [23]. Гельминтоспориоз -одно из наиболее распространенных и вредоносных заболеваний ячменя, поражающих растения в период от всходов до созревания [24].…”
