“…NDM-1 producers generally associated with Enterobacteriaceae species have also been reported, albeit with much lower frequency, in Latin American countries, including Guatemala, Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil (3). Moreover, production of NDM-1 in this geographic region has also been noted in Acinetobacter baumannii in Honduras and Brazil (3,4) and in Acinetobacter pittii in Paraguay and Brazil (5,6). Here, we report the first case of an NDM-1-producing Acinetobacter species in Argentina, an Acinetobacter bereziniae clinical isolate.…”

“…Other reports from China, Egypt, and France followed (5)(6)(7)27). The Latin American countries Honduras (28) and Paraguay (29) have also reported Acinetobacter pittii isolates. ST25 NDM-1-positive A. baumannii originating from the Balkan region has been reported in European studies (13,25).…”

“…Although NDM-1-positive Enterobacteriaceae have been isolated in Rio Grande do Sul (10,11), approximately 1,200 km south of Londrina, there was no history of patient transfer between these locations. Recently, NDM-positive A. pittii was isolated in Rio Grande do Sul (A. Barth, personal communication) and in the bordering country of Paraguay (29), but there is no apparent epidemiological link. Further investigations are under way to establish a hypothesis for the origin of this bla NDM-1 plasmid.…”

“…Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) was performed according to the Institute Pasteur scheme (http://www.pasteur.fr) and A. pittii isolate MP was identified as ST119. Interestingly, two bla NDM -positive A. pittii isolates were recently identified in Paraguay [4], a neighbouring country of Brazil, but those isolates belonged to ST320 and ST321. The only reports of A. pittii ST119 isolates are from Japan, with isolates producing the carbapenemase IMP-19 [1].…”
