Emerging Corrosion Inhibitors for Interfacial Coating

Abstract: Abstract:Corrosion is a deterioration of a metal due to reaction with environment. The use of corrosion inhibitors is one of the most effective ways of protecting metal surfaces against corrosion. Their effectiveness is related to the chemical composition, their molecular structures and affinities for adsorption on the metal surface. This review focuses on the potential of ionic liquid, polyionic liquid (PIL) and graphene as promising corrosion inhibitors in emerging coatings due to their remarkable properties… Show more

“…The free electrons on the heteroatoms involve in the formation of coordinate covalent bonds with the metallic electrons, which binds the coating tightly to the metal surface. Hence, the coating acts as a strong barrier to restrict the diffusion of corrosive species . The order of corrosion inhibition was found as PUI‐1.0 > PUI‐0.75 > PUI‐0.50, mainly due to the combined effect of imide groups and cross‐linking density.…”

“…The two main challenges associated with the inhibitors being adsorbed on the metal surface are as follows: (1) metal-inhibitor interactions and (2) transport of the CI from bulk solution to the surface of the metal. The immobilization of CIs into micro-/nanocontainers could help overcome these issues [119].…”

“…A corrosion inhibitor is known as a chemical constituent that can diminish or prevent and control corrosion when added in small amount to the metal environment. Corrosion inhibitors are considered as the first line of defense against oil and chemical industry corrosion [27]. Corrosion inhibitors are sought after giving metals temporary protection during transportation and storage as well as localized protection to prevent corrosion that may have resulted from accumulation of small amounts of an aggressive phase.…”
