Emotion Perception Mediates the Predictive Relationship Between Verbal Ability and Functional Outcome in High-Functioning Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract: The aim of this study was to identify specific cognitive abilities that predict functional outcome in high-functioning adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and to clarify the contribution of those abilities and their relationships. In total, 41 adults with ASD performed cognitive tasks in a broad range of neuro- and social cognitive domains, and information concerning functional outcomes was obtained. Regression analyses revealed that emotion perception and verbal generativity predicted adaptive functio… Show more

“…However, no review to date has investigated direct comparisons of nonsocial cognition in adulthood between these two disorders. Given that nonsocial cognition is an important predictor of functional outcomes in both disorders (10,11), comparing nonsocial cognition between ASD and schizophrenia is critical for adapting common strategies for remediating cognition to improve functional outcomes across these neurodevelopmental disorders.…”

“…Consequently, the prediction horizon is equal to 10 ( 10 P = ) adopted in this paper. In order to validate the T-S SFPC method proposed in the paper compared with MPC (Diehl et al, 2002 andKunisaki et al, 2008;Kirches et al, 2012;Lopez-Negrete et al, 2013;Jaschke et al, 2014;Otsuka et al, 2017;La et al, 2017) and the PID (Ntogramatzidis et al, 2011) methods, a comparative analysis is therefore performed. Here, the PID controller by Ntogramatzidis in the system (39) is expressed as: The performance results associated with the PID, MPC and T-S SFPC are shown in Fig.…”

“…Interestingly, the SED domain "aggression regulation" is particularly associated with more severe problem behaviours (Böhm et al, ). Indeed, emotional functioning might mediate the correlation between the severity of IDD and adaptive functioning, as suggested by Otsuka, Uono, Yoshimura, Zhao, and Toichi (). This is supported by the high correlation between the level of ED and adaptive behaviours, as measured with the Vineland Scale (La Malfa, Lassi, Bertelli, Albertini, & Došen, ).…”
