Emotional Closeness as a Mediator of the Effect of Genetic Relatedness on Altruism

Abstract: Inclusive fitness theory has been used to explain the overall pattern of altruistic behavior. However, this theory does not address the proximal causes of altruism. The purpose of the present study was to increase the understanding of altruism by testing a model that includes both ultimate and proximate causes. In particular, emotional closeness was tested as a mediator of the effect of genetic relatedness on altruistic behavior. This was accomplished by having college students choose which of their family mem… Show more

“…Indeed, research indicates that individuals are motivated to expend more energy to benefit others who are important to them or emotionally connected to them (Batson et al, 1997;Burnstein et al, 1994;Korchmaros & Kenny, 2001). When employees care about the beneficiaries of their work, they begin to see their identities as overlapping with beneficiaries' identities (Cialdini, Brown, Lewis, Luce, & Neuberg, 1997), and they perceive acting in the interest of these beneficiaries as consistent with their core personal values (Sheldon & Elliot, 1999;Sheldon & Houser-Marko, 2001).…”

“…These early forms of "cooperative awareness" between caregiver and child begin to create a world of shared meaning, empathic understanding and appropriate linking of one's own emotions with those of others that then generalize beyond the parent-child dyad. " (Zahn-Waxler 1991,155-156) Relevant to the current research, Korchmaros and Kenny (2001) have argued that `emotional closeness' may mediate "the effect of genetic relatedness on altruism".…”

“…Historically, altruistic behaviors were described as undergirded by self-interest (Holmes, Miller, & Lerner, 2002) and mediated by factors such as emotional closeness (Korchmaros & Kenny, 2001). Theories such as Competitive Altruism Hypothesis stated that altruistic behaviors are enacted for reputational purposes (Hardy & Vugt, 2006).…”
