Emotions Across Cultures

Abstract: What can evolutionary theories tell us about emotions, and how can research on emotions inform evolutionary theories? In this chapter, we discuss links between evolutionary theories of emotion and the cross-cultural study of emotion. We examine what predictions can be derived from evolutionary theories about cross-cultural consistency and variability. In particular, we emphasise the notion that evolved psychological mechanisms result in cultural differences instantiated as variations on common themes of human … Show more

“…Though we identified a few appraisal dimensions that differed between the two cultures on some emotions, the overall appraisal patterns of the positive emotions we examined were quite culturally consistent. Our findings are consistent with the notion that evolved psychological mechanisms result in cultural differences instantiated as variations on common themes, thus emphasizing both preparedness and learning in emotion processes (Kamiloglu et al, 2021).…”

“…These differences are sustained and potentially exacerbated over time as individuals learn expressive behaviours from their cultural environment. Culture-specific expressions thus exist around universally shared expression patterns [ 18 ]. The differences between the vocalizations of different groups are also notable to listeners, resulting in perceivers being more accurate in recognizing emotions from vocal expressions produced by individuals from their own cultural group as compared to others (recent meta-analysis: [ 19 ]).…”

“…Our starting point to talk about culture is the perception of the cultural dimension (Hofstede, 2011), for which culture has to do with the collective programming of the mind, which differentiates the members of a group from others (Kamiloğlu et al, 2021).…”
