Empirically grounded agent-based models of innovation diffusion: a critical review

Abstract: Innovation diffusion has been studied extensively in a variety of disciplines, including sociology, economics, marketing, ecology, and computer science. Traditional literature on innovation diffusion has been dominated by models of aggregate behavior and trends. However, the agent-based modeling (ABM) paradigm is gaining popularity as it captures agent heterogeneity and enables fine-grained modeling of interactions mediated by social and geographic networks. While most ABM work on innovation diffusion is theor… Show more

“…In short, agent-based models help us to gain insight into the emergence of complex systems by systematically testing a variety of different parameters and the combined impact they exert on the emergent system [58]. Previous research has extensively used agent-based models to study phenomena such as spatial segregation [60], opinion diffusion [61], the adoption of innovation [62], and cascade effects [63].…”

“…The conceptual notion of innovation can be applied "far more broadly to consider the spread of ideas and practices" [63]. It has been evidenced to be "a driver of regional economic development", and innovation diffusion is strongly correlated to economic growth [64].…”
