Employment Landscape for NESTs and NNESTs

Abstract

As discussions on English as an international language progress in scholarly circles, the employment landscape in English language teaching (ELT) continues to be dominated by prejudice against non‐native‐speaking teachers of English. This entry explores the ways in which an entrenched native speaker preference in ELT is perpetuated through different discourses, including recruitment advertisements. After framing the issue and explaining why it matters, suggestions are made that teacher educators and teachers work together in challenging a prejudice that threatens both native‐speaking and non‐native‐speaking teachers in ELT.
