Empowering critical thinking skills on different academic levels through discovery-based multiple representation learning

Abstract: Critical Thinking Skills (CTSs) are necessary for science mastery. To help the students develop their CTSs, discovery-based learning and student-centered activities may be beneficial. This study aims at investigating: (1) effects of discovery-based multiple representation learning (DMRL) model on CTSs; (2) effects of different academic achievement on CTSs; and (3) interaction between a learning model and types of different academic achievement on CTSs. The participants were 162 students, grade 7th from 3 publi… Show more

“…Writing news helps students develop their critical thinking skills in writing because critical thinking skills and writing news texts were interrelated (Linda, 2021). In line with current developments, critical thinking skills were very important because they have long-term benefits in education to help students solve problems in the learning process and apply them in everyday life (Kadduora in Chusni et al, 2022).…”

“…The implementation of project and problem based learning model can improve student learning outcomes and creative attitudes at elementary school age (Fauziah & Setiawan, 2019;Yustina et al, 2022). Critical and creative thinking attitudes can also be developed through the discovery learning model (Chusni et al, 2022). Furthermore, learning by doing can be carried out to provide meaningful learning, namely by inviting children to participate directly with the object of study being studied.…”

“…In today's global educational landscape, there is an increasingly pronounced emphasis on the integration of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) as a primary educational objective. This shift is spurred by the crucial awareness that the traditional rote memorization-based curricula no longer suffice in preparing students for the complex challenges of the 21st century (Chusni et al, 2022;Mayer, 2002;Ministry of Education Malaysia, 2013;Rosli et al, Vol 13, Issue 2, (2024) E-ISSN: 2226-6348 2022. The decline in performance of many countries on international assessments such as Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMMS) highlights the urgency of cultivating critical thinking skills among students (Kadijevich et al, 2023;OECD, 2019;Yoki et al, 2018).…”

“…2) How did teachers incorporate HOTS into their instructional practices? A growing body of research emphasizes the crucial role played by the integration of HOTSrelated tasks in elevating the depth and quality of student learning outcomes (Ching & da Silva, 2017;Chusni et al, 2022;Krathwohl, 2002;Momen et al, 2022;Pratiwi et al, 2017). Yet, delving into the complexity of how teachers incorporate these tasks within their instructional approaches can yield a more profound understanding of the extent to which teachers nurture critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and problem-solving skills in their students.…”
