Emulating Spatial Characteristics of MIMO Channels for OTA Testing

Abstract: This paper discusses over the air (OTA) testing for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) capable terminals with emphasis on channel spatial characteristics emulation. A novel technique to obtain optimum power weights for the OTA probes based on convex optimization is proposed. The proposed technique emulates spatial correlation as well as introduces constraints on the maximum deviation between the target power azimuth spectrum (PAS) and the emulated PAS in terms of mean angle of arrival (AoA) and azimuth spre… Show more

“…Note that the spatial correlation results at the Rx side have been reported in the literature, see, e.g. [2], [6], [16], and is included here to explain the capacity results in the following sections. The measurement validation results presented in Figure 3, 4 and 5 are explained later in Section IV.…”

“…Therefore, there is a strong need for efficient testing of the throughput performance of a MIMO terminal [1]. Throughput measurements of LTE terminals have been reported using various MIMO over-the-air (OTA) testing methods [2]- [6]. Tremendous effort is ongoing in the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) standardization on MIMO-OTA harmonization, where the objective is to ensure same throughput results should be achieved with the same MIMO-OTA method in different laboratories (i.e.…”

“…Therefore, to reduce the need of measurement campaigns when measuring the performance of cellular devices, the telecom industry has adopted Over-the-Air (OTA) testing [4] using reverberation chambers [5]- [7], OTA multiprobe testing [8]- [11], and verification by the two stage method [12]. The research area of OTA multi-probe testing for cellular devices is very active today.…”
