Enamel Resistance to Demineralization After Bracket Debonding Using Fluoride Varnish

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the elemental content and morphology of enamel subjected to demineralization cycles after bracket debonding, adhesive remnant removal, and application of a fluoride varnish. 125 bovine teeth were divided into five groups (n = 25): 1) Intact enamel; 2) Intact enamel + demineralization cycles (DC); 3) Enamel after adhesive removal; 4)Enamel after adhesive removal + DC; 5) Enamel after adhesive removal + Profluorid + DC. The weight percentages of calcium (Ca), phosphorous (P)… Show more

“…Whether with Novamin or Biomin; there was no statistically significant change in mean Ca: P ratio after de-mineralization/re-mineralization process. constant and indisputable features of sound enamel which were in accordance with most of the studies (13,14) . The demineralized specimens in both groups showed a prismatic pattern of destruction with a honeycomb appearance.…”

“…According to Berkovitz et al (25), enamel surface, if unabraded, is aprismatic in most areas, thus more highly mineralized, and exhibited features as perikymata ridges and grooves with prism ends marking. Additionally, Ca and P wt% of control group in this study were comparable to those of intact enamel presented in previous research (26).…”

“…Fluoride varnish was effective on enamel demineralization reduction, remineralization improvement and caries cure (remission) closed to orthodontic brackets (15,25,26) as well as some similar studies on orthodontic patients (27)(28)(29). According to the results, fluoride varnish was significantly better than control groups (P < 0.05).…”
