Ending malnutrition in all its forms requires scaling up proven nutrition interventions and much more: a 129-country analysis

Abstract: Background Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2.2 calls for an end to all forms of malnutrition, with 2025 targets of a 40% reduction in stunting (relative to 2012), for wasting to occur in less than 5% of children, and for a 50% reduction in anaemia in women (15–49 years). We assessed the likelihood of countries reaching these targets by scaling up proven interventions and identified priority interventions, based on cost-effectiveness. Methods For… Show more

“…The current set of nutrition investments included in current models are insufficient to meet the sustainable development goals (ie, a 40% reduction in stunting, 50% reduction in anemia for women) as shown in the 2013 Lancet series [ 19 ]. There is a critical need to include a broader set of interventions – such as those that address the underlying determinants of malnutrition - to improve nutrition outcomes into current impact and optimization modeling efforts to inform priority-setting for nutrition investments [ 35 ].…”

“…These estimates considered costs of supplements, service delivery, and program expenses. We obtained costs for BEP supplementation from Scott and colleagues [ 34 ]. The authors calculated country-specific BEP costs by scaling the range of costs from Shekar and colleagues [ 35 ].…”
