Endocarditis due to Neisseria elongata: A case report and review of the literature

Abstract: Introduction Neisseria elongata, which is part of the normal oropharyngeal bacterial flora, can be an aggressive organism causing serious infections including infective endocarditis. N. elongata infective endocarditis is rare and no current guidelines exist to direct antibiotic selection and/or duration of treatment.Case report We report a case of infective endocarditis due to N. elongata and a review of the literature. Our patient is a healthy young woman, who was found to have an aortic root abscess with val… Show more

“…The main features of these cases are summarized in Table 1. [1][2][3][4][5] In our case, the presence of two predisposing factors prompted us to quickly seek endocarditis, which was confirmed by echocardiography. However, a review of the literature showed that N. elongata endocarditis can also occur in the absence of risk factors, which should encourage clinicians to be vigilant when dealing with N. elongata bacteremia.…”

“…However, a review of the literature showed that N. elongata endocarditis can also occur in the absence of risk factors, which should encourage clinicians to be vigilant when dealing with N. elongata bacteremia. [1][2][3][4][5] We noted other peculiarities of N. elongata endocarditis. First of all, they seem to affect people under 40 in almost half of the cases, including in the absence of underlying disease.…”

“…A recent review of the literature concerning N. elongata endocarditis shows that 60% of patients with this infection were noted to require surgical intervention, mostly because of the development of complications such as congestive heart failure, systemic emboli, and abscess formation [1]. In our patient, the main indication for surgical intervention was the large size of the vegetation.…”

“…Neisseria elongata is a gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium that lives in the normal flora of the oropharynx [1]. The genus elongata is divided into three sub-species differentiated by biochemical characteristics: N. elongata, N. glycolytica, and N. nitroreducens [2].…”

“…N. elongata is a Gram-negative bacterium that is part of the normal flora of the oral cavity 26 . There are a number of case reports of infective endocarditis associated with colonization by N. elongata [26][27][28][29] . In addition, the bacterium has been implicated in some cases of osteomyelitis 29,30 .…”
