Abstract: Background: Soy phytoestrogens are known to influence the hormonal status acting as partial estrogen agonists. Soy-derived food supplements are advised for hormone replacement therapy, prevention of atherosclerosis, age-related cognitive decline and even hormone-dependent cancer, although results from clinical studies are controversial. “…Isoflavones can bind to the sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), which stimulate SHBG synthesis and alter the concentration of circulating steroid hormones (Adlercreutz et al, 1987). With high concentration of isoflavones and soy-rich diet, total testosterone levels in men can be increased but free testosterone levels is not increased due to increased SHBG uptake and serum testosterone levels is not altered in women (Berrino et al, 2001;Celec et al, 2005).
