Endodontic Materials

Abstract: This article presents a review of materials currently used in the practice of endodontics. Current endodontic materials include those that have been thoroughly tested by scientific investigation, clinical usage, and time, as well as others that are the result of new knowledge in the field of dental materials. Article sections are devoted to obturation materials, sealers, irrigation materials, smear layer removal, root-end filling materials, and intracanal medicaments. Knowing the particular qualities of materi… Show more

“…1 EDTA is a common clinically applied chelating agent which is capable, when used in conjunction with NaClO, of effectively removing the smear layer. Since the self-etching sealers are incapable of creating a hybrid layer, 31 the NaClO-EDTA irrigation protocol was used in this study.…”

“…The ideal RCS will completely attach the defective bonds, entomb the remaining bacteria, and achieve a hermetical seal of the root canal system. 1 The indispensible criteria of an ideal RCS include: effective adhesion to both the radicular dentin and the core root canal filling materials, no shrinkage upon setting, biocompatibility, and suitable working time. 2 Methacrylate-based RCS were clinically introduced in the mid-1970s and have since experienced four generations of development, evolving from non-etching to self-etching adhesion potential.…”

“…The purpose of the retrograde filling is to seal the canal in order to prevent passage of bacteria or their toxins from the canal space into periradicular tissues. Practically every restorative material used on the crowns of teeth has been tried as a root-end filling material 1. Unlike orthograde root canal filling materials, root-end filling materials are placed in direct contact with vital periapical tissues.…”

“…The matrix is a mixture of Bisphenol A epoxy (Bis-GMA), urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA) and hydrophilic dysfunctional methacrylates, while the filler consists of calcium hydroxide, barium sulphate, barium glass and silica. 23 A series of recent studies have claimed that Resilon has several characteristics which offer an improvement over guttapercha. 22,24,25 However, attention has tended…”
