Endodontic treatment of a maxillary central incisor with three root canals

Abstract: IntroductionThe presence of an additional root canal in the maxillary central incisor is extremely rare. A number of studies of root canal anatomy have described that the maxillary central incisor has only one root and one canal in 100% of examined cases (1-4), with variations only in the number of lateral canals and the position of the apical foramen. Some clinical reports have described a maxillary central incisor with two canals or two roots (5-14). Only one report has described endodontic treatment of a ve… Show more

“…Maxillary incisors typically have a single root canal that is housed in a single root. [ 7 ] Previous studies have documented anatomical variations, i.e., presence of single-root with two canals,[ 8 9 ] or double-rooted teeth[ 10 11 ] up to three canals[ 12 ] usually coexist with developmental anomalies such as gemination, fusion, or dens invaginatus. [ 13 ] The most common variation in all these recorded cases was Vertucci type IV (2-2).…”

“…4,10 Using magnification might also be an advantage when dealing with severe anatomic deviations. [6][7][8]17,18 In order to carry out the root canal treatment of the presented case, an operating microscope was used, at 16x and 25x magnification. This device also contributed to the success of the technical procedure, by preventing excessive wear of the dentin area and improving visibility to locate the root canals.…”
